Finding and treating dental problems at an early stage can save time, money and unnecessary pain.
Thorough Examination of the Teeth and Gums:
As a part of your regular checkup and cleaning, the doctor will perform a thorough examination of your teeth, tongue, and surrounding gum tissue for unusual growths or discoloration. Digital X-rays may be part of this examination as well.
Digital x-rays can reveal greater detail than traditional x-ray films while using only 1/16 the radiation.
A digital x-ray examination may reveal:
- Small areas of decay between the teeth
- Infections in the bone
- Abscesses or cysts
- Developmental abnormalities
- Hidden tumors, or even a blockage in carotid artery
Oral Cancer Screening:
At each appointment, the dentist will perform a screening for oral cancer. He will review digital x-rays that have been taken.
If at any time you notice any changes in the appearance of your mouth or any of the signs and symptoms listed below, contact the dentist at once:
- A persistent sore or irritation that persists for more than a week
- Color changes such as the development of red and/or white lesions
- Pain, tenderness or numbness anywhere in the mouth or lips
- A lump, thickening, rough spot, crusty or small eroded area
- Difficulty in chewing, swallowing, speaking or moving the jaw or tongue
- Change in bite
Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction (TMJ):
A thorough exam by the dentist and appropriate x-rays can help identify the source of the pain in or around the ear, tenderness of the jaw, clicking or popping noises when opening the mouth, or even headaches and neck aches.
Treatments for this pain may include stress reducing exercises, muscle relaxants, or wearing a mouth protector to prevent teeth grinding. They’ve been successful for many and the dentist can recommend which is best for you. Mouth protectors or night guards can be made for you right in the office.
All patients are screened for orthodontic problems.
Braces are not just for cosmetics. Misaligned teeth can lead to excessive wear, greater tooth decay and TMJ problems.
Children and adults can both benefit from orthodontics. It is recommended that every child receive an orthodontic evaluation by age seven. Doctor Webster does not do full orthodontic cases in his office, but will refer you to a specialist if needed.
